五十年代，祖（吴岱融）冷落娇妻慧（朱宝意）而四处拈花惹草，娟（林燕明）为夺祖而对慧不利，混乱中，祖错手杀娟，嫁祸予慧。慧被判死刑，含恨而终，临死前誓要向祖报仇。 至九十年代，慧投胎为宁，对前生事仍念念不忘，不惜抛下一切，远赴匈牙利寻找祖之下落，结识青年奇，在他相助下，查出祖已死去多时。奇与宁依依不舍，二人回港继续调查，竟发觉奇是祖所投胎。宁恐怕重续前生孽缘而逃避奇，但奇对宁极力追求，二人终相恋。 一直单恋奇之DiDi，乃娟所投胎，痛恨宁夺爱，欲杀她洩愤，奇为救宁，杀死DiDi。奇为逃避警方追捕而身受重伤，奇与宁为改变今生之悲惨遭遇，决定一起回到前世，改变命运。。Volker Schlöndorff transposes Bertolt Brecht’s late-expressionist work to latter-day 1969.
